Hello Blog Watchers (i.e. Blotchers!)
Here I am on the Carnival Valor - the low lighting in this internet cafe is not condusive to correct spelling, but I'll do my best! Haven't worked out how to upload photies yet - sorry!
Anyway - back to Saturday. The 9 hour flight wasn't as boring as I thought it might be! The pilot gave us all a shock when he welcomed us "onboard this flight to Los Angeles". Now I know my geography is bad, but even I know LA is nowhere near Miami! Miami from above is fascinating - the coastline is just so STRAIGHT. When you fly over land it's one huge grid system - like a giant computer chip!
What is it about passport control that makes you feel so guilty? I forgot to fill in the tear off slip of the visa waiver form and was sent back behind the yellow line like a naughty schoolboy. I wasn't brave enough to ask Mr Surly Passport Control Guy if he had a pen. Poor old Ms D fared even worse. She was asked if she was on any meds. She replied "no" and Mr Surly said "are you sure??"!! I know we both look pale, but neither of us are gravely ill!
We got a cab outside the airport to the hotel. With our usual luck, we had the only cab driver in Miami who didn't know where our hotel was and spent AGES trying to find the place. I suggested he ask a traffic warden. "Excuse me sir" he said to the traffic warden, quickly followed by "I'm sorry....excuse me Miss". Well she was very manly! Eventually we got there. Although it's called the "Fortune House Hotel" it's actually a series of apartments - and it was absolutely gorgeous! We were sorry to only be spending one night there. We were on the 26th floor (no 13th floor for superstitious reasons1) so we had wonderful views of the Brickell area of Downtown Miami. Hopefully I can show you some photos soon! Ms D and I were both worried about this "hotel" before we arrived because the reviews on the Trip Advisor website were very schizophrenic. However, we thought it was MARVELLOUS! x
