Another early start today (6:30am) as the ship docked at the Mexican island of Cozumel. Then we took the tender to the mainland. The tender boat was very roomy and was in fact like a little cruise ship! The staff on board took every opportunity to sell us everything from sombreros to bug repellant. They were also trying to ply us with alcohol. A Bloody Mary at 7 in the morning? I don't think so! The head waiter greeted us in Spanish and asked us if we knew any Spanish. We all said no, then he replied "Pina Colada, fajitas, paella...you see you do know Spanish". Very droll.
When we reached dry land we took a coach to the ancient city of Tulum. Our tour guide was Carlos who looked like a cross between Bela Lugosi and Sulu from Star Trek. He also asked us if we knew any Spanish. We all said no, then he replied "Pina Colada, fajitas,............". It's at this point that I wished I knew the Spanish for "we've heard this one before". We stopped off in a place that made Obisidian ornaments. Obsidian is a wonderful mineral that looks black but turns into a gold colour when shone in the sun. I would have bought some, but it was a tad expensive and I'm very tight with my money!
Tulum itself was chock full of history and ancient sites. Would have loved to seen more but the heat and sun were proving too challenging! Luckily the coach provided us with free cold towels and bottled water. Carlos dropped some very heavy hints that we should tip him and the driver seperately. I agreed with Ms D that I would tip Bela, sorry, Carlos, and she would tip the driver. However, on the way out the driver was the first one to catch my eye so I tipped him and said to Ms D behind me "I've tipped the driver". Unfortunately she thought I said "Tip the driver", and so the driver ended up getting double bubble from us, and nothing for Carlos. No wonder he looked hurt!
Back on the ship the waiters at Washington Restuarant give us a display of their dancing skills as they cavorted about to "Tally Ho" (from the Slumdog Millionaire film). You'll be relieved to know they did this after they served us!
We were awfully worried about Big Tex today as we hadn't heard a jot from him. Had he overdone it on the bacon? Hoorah - he was back on the tannoy in the evening telling us about the fun programme for tomorrow with his usual texan drawl and customary "Bye y'all" at the end!
A fun day at sea tomorrow (Saturday) then we arrive back in Miami in the morning. But the adventure doesn't stop there - we have two days of touring in Miami Monday & Tuesday. Don't know when I'll get chance to blog on dry land, but will try and find somehere!
Bye y'all. x

Hiya Mr W and Ms D :-) Sounds like you are having a blast. Good to hear Big Tex wasn't found dead near a fridge with a face full of bacon clutching his gladys glockenspiel :-). The turtle farm sounded great until you mentioned the soup bit - i know - i'me the typical veggie! D - just to put the fear of god into the yanks on board - any more bus trips and bring and inflatable steering wheel with you and throw it down the back of the bus half way through the trip :-)) Good to hear my wire to the good ship Dave waiters paid off and that you have water on tap (eek - a pun). Will be over your pad again tomorrow - so could always relay your dizzy news if you can't wait.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to my expensive Obisidian artefact present :-)))
